Scalability is a term that comes up again and again in the blockchain space. But what does it really mean?

In this article, we discuss scalability in web3 as a key point in developing a long-term project that can meet the demands of a growing market.

What is scalability?

The scalability of a project indicates its capacity to handle an increase in demand and to respond to it in an adequate way. Offering a scalable service in a Web3 project means planning ahead for user growth while being able to adapt to a decrease in the same.

Most startups aim to build a scalable economic model to grow from a small company to a large one in a short time. Scalability is achieved with tools that make it easier to replicate concepts adapted to the target customers and users.

Scalability is one of the 3 major issues of the blockchain trilemma first described by Vitalik Buterin.

The blockchain trilemma refers to the mathematical and theoretical problem of balancing the 3 key features that make a good blockchain: decentralization, scalability, and security. It leads to the necessity to make compromises until this trilemma is solved through blockchain architecture or mathematical innovation:

  • Decentralization refers to the idea that a blockchain should be distributed (through peer-to-peer technology) in order to be decentralized.
  • Security is the ability of a blockchain to protect against attacks and maintain the integrity of its data.
  • Scalability refers to a blockchain’s capacity to process transactions efficiently and handle many users without becoming slow or unmanageable.

Scalability as a requirement of successful Web3 projects

In the vast world of Web3 projects and especially, the metaverse, scalability is a parameter that we should consistently take into account.

History has shown that successful projects are able to adapt their model to deal with blockchain limitations and find long-term scaling solutions.

In 2017, the Ethereum network faced a unique problem – it was being congested by CryptoKitties. The popular game, which allowed users to breed, buy, and sell virtual cats, had become a viral sensation, with some kittens selling for six figures. The sheer number of transactions on the Ethereum network caused it to see a sixfold increase in requests in just the first week of December alone.

Some examples of CryptoKitties

Many feared that the Ethereum blockchain would come to a standstill before it even had a chance to live up to its potential. In response, a group of Ethereum developers came together to formulate short-term solutions and long-term scaling solutions.

Not only did these efforts alleviate the immediate issue, but they also laid the foundation for a more functional future. The CryptoKitties saga illustrates the cooperative nature of the blockchain space and developer community and the importance of scalability in Web3 projects

In the metaverse, projects must be able to adapt and find long-term solutions to deal with blockchain limitations. Their scalability is crucial, as it directly affects their ability to handle large amounts of data and transactions without becoming unresponsive or slow.

AlphaVerse: A scalable metaverse

A scalable company is one that has the ability to increase its output without a corresponding increase in input, such as labor or capital.

This means that as the business grows and takes on more customers or clients, it’s able to handle the increased demand without having to significantly increase its resources or expenses.

A scalable model leads to improved efficiency, higher profitability, and a stronger competitive advantage. Furthermore, scalability can also give a company the flexibility to adapt to new opportunities and challenges, such as entering new markets or introducing new products and services.

As for the process of creating universes, we define the AlphaVerse as a galaxy composed of many planets. At the center of this galaxy is a terraformed space station where you can find the Hub. All the experiences we create afterward open the door to a new planet (our own universe or our collaborators’). Each comes with its own artistic direction and its own game mechanics.

This choice of lore allows us not to limit the size of the AlphaVerse. We can also offer users a multitude of experiences. There is something for everyone, from the world of gaming through music to protecting the planet, and much more.

Scalability tools in AlphaVerse

To create environments with roads, docks, and buildings faster, we build tools that create hundreds of models from a common base.

Laying stones one by one is time-consuming and often gives a non-random, uniform look and feel. Instead, roads are automatically created from a simple line and textured in advance. This process saves a lot of time and effort for both our clients and our teams.

Our generative design tool presented below is another tool serving scalability. This program lets us create a multitude of different buildings with a similar look and feel. We can also build a varied and vibrant city very quickly.

When it comes to creating universes and experiences, developing tools that ensure scalability is an important part of our approach. We aim to build experiences and tools that can adapt and grow as our customer’s and users’ needs evolve. This enables us to provide powerful performance and support without having to constantly increase our resources or costs.

As a result, our customers receive a high level of value and support from the tools we develop. Scalability-oriented Web3 projects like AlphaVerse have the capacity to collaborate with several projects at the same time and help customers to advance seamlessly in the fast-paced Web3 ecosystem. Scalable models and creative processes can be adapted to and customized according to our customers’ desires and needs.

By focusing on scalability, we can be more flexible and responsive to changing market conditions and customer needs. We can also adapt to new opportunities and challenges quickly and easily.

AlphaVerse is constantly expanding with new universes. Let us know if you have a project that could be part of our universe of universes. We would be happy to discuss our potential collaboration with you.
